JOCKEY CRITICALLY INJURED IN
HOOSIER PARK QUARTER HORSE RACE
Anderson, Ind.; –August 24, 2011– Jockey, Richard Gilliard, was critically injured during the conclusion of Tuesday night’s 10th and final race at Hoosier Park Racing & Casino. The injuries were inflicted when his horse, MCM He Be Azoomin, drifted out and ran into the paddock entry rail upon crossing the finish line in the 350-yard dash for two-year-old Quarter Horses.
Gilliard was stabilized by the Hoosier Park emergency medical staff and then transported to St. John’s Hospital in Anderson, Indiana. He was later air lifted to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Indianapolis. Gilliard remains in critical condition and under the care of St. Vincent’s medical staff.
“Richard’s family has been notified of the situation and they are traveling from South Carolina to join him at St. Vincent’s Hospital.” said Brian Elmore, Hoosier Park’s general manager of racing. “The thoughts and prayers of all of us go out to Richard and his family at this time. We are waiting for further information regarding his condition”

Last night Brian left a message on my phone, and he shared this info with Regina, that there are 2 ways people can make contributions: 1) to a special fund the Hoosier Park book keeper set up for Richard Gilliard (money can be transferred from a horsemens account into this special account), or, 2) they can make checks payable to QHRAI, note that it is a contribution for Richard Gilliard and mail to:

If anyone has any questions they can call me at 317-509-6372. The immediate needs to be taken care of are housing for Richey's family when they are here and transportation costs to get them here. The Purdue Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (ADDL) will be providing Equine Piroplasmosis testing free of charge to Indiana owners with horses racing at the Indiana race tracks. Please address any test specific questions to the Purdue ADDL.

Equine Piroplasmosis testing offered
The Indiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory is approved to perform equine piroplasmosis analyses for inter- and intrastate movement and will offer testing for Equine Piroplasmosis beginning January 1, 2012.
To be eligible for a waiver of the test fee for state mandated testing, serum samples submitted for Equine Piroplasmosis must state on the ADDL Accession form that the samples are from horses currently belonging to Indiana owners that will be at the Indiana race tracks: Hoosier Park, Anderson, IN, and Indiana Downs, Shelbyville, IN. Samples submitted to ADDL for testing must be drawn by a licensed and accredited veterinarian, the animal ID must be listed, and reason for testing clearly stated on the ADDL submission form.
Testing for international export or for cases with clinical signs compatible with Equine Piroplasmosis must be tested at NVSL.
The charge for non-state mandated piroplasmosis testing for both B. caballi and T. equi will be $24 ($7.00 each for B.caballi and T. equi, plus the $10 ADDL accession fee).
